Viaton Industries to cut costs with on-site wind power

Powder technology firm Viaton Industries Limited is to build a wind turbine on its Brassington site after Derbyshire Dales District Council last week granted planning permission for a single turbine, predicted to provide around 6570 MW/h per annum based on an application prepared by environmental and town planning specialist Atmos Consulting.

Like any heavy industrial firm, Viaton’s energy consumption costs have risen astronomically and generating its own renewable energy is an increasingly attractive option to significantly reduce manufacturing costs. 70 percent of the energy produced from the wind turbine will be used on site at Viaton, with any surplus being fed into the grid at times the plant is not operating.

Atmos Consulting carried out a full environmental impact assessment for the proposal. The quality of the whole proposal was praised by both nature advisory body Natural England and Derbyshire Dales District Council.

Billion pound wind farm announced by Scottish company Burcote

Scottish company Burcote Consultancy has announced plans to invest more than a billion pounds to develop 10 wind farms in the UK. At present the company has not secured any planning permission and will not seek finance for the projects until it does.

The Scottish government said the renewable energy sector secured £750 million of investment last year. If given consent, the farms could produce an annual electricity output capable of meeting the energy needs of 554,000 homes. Read more ...

Farmers on Black Isle, Scotland urged to develop wind power

A farmers' co-operative, based on the Black Isle, Scotland, is spearheading a drive to develop locally owned small scale wind energy projects across the Highlands. But now with support from Highland LEADER and the Co-operative Enterprise Hub, they have turned their attention to a different kind of harvesting by encouraging farmers to take advantage of the Scottish region’s wind resource.

Steering Group Chairman Alan Whiteford, Castlecraig Nigg, said: "Most of the wind farm investment in the Highlands to date has come from investors outside the region and we are determined to reverse this situation and ensure local farmers and communities are the major beneficiaries of future developments." Denmark produces the worlds largest wind blades

Denmark has set a world record for manufacturing the world longest wind turbine blades at Siemans Wind Power in Aalborg, each blade will be 75 meters long, weighing in at 20 tons. Once completed the diameter of the circle that the blades will make is 154 meters once placed on the turbine. The blades once completed will be connected to a newly launched Siemens 6-megawatt turbine, and will be able to generate enough power to to supply 5000 households with electricity. Read more ...

Dragons den style renewable energy event 2012

On January 18, a dragon den renewable event will look at new energy generating ideas, such as Algae photo-bioreactors, a new generation of sea and wind turbines, bio char and bio coal, along with several waste to energy ideas and two new sea powered energy generation concepts. None of these new concepts have been publicly aired.

The panel will consist of six experts with broad experience and skills. They will also be able to advise on different topic like funding, legal, incentives and sector specific advice. NFUS calls for Scottish government on agri-renewables

Recently the National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) has delivered fresh guidance to its members on developing wind energy projects. The union has also called for the Scottish government to make a start on the promised agri-renewables strategy that it promised in August 2011. “Since the commitment to the strategy in July, the list of issues around farm-based energy generation have continued to grow. They include inconsistencies and constraints in the planning system. Difficulties in getting site approval and, for wind energy, in meeting noise requirements mean that many farmers are struggling to get energy projects off the ground. Read more ...

Vietnam to get help from Denmark on wind-farms

Denmark is to help build and operate wind-farms in Vietnam's provinces and cities across the country. The decision to assist in the creation of the wind-farms was made at a workshop jointly run by Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) and the Danish Embassy in Hanoi yesterday.
