Farmers invited to see biomass in action at Country Estate

Farmers are being invited to a historic country estate, to learn about biomass and how to get into renewable fuel. The Barningham Park Estate a 7000 acre estate in North Yorkshire, has set up a commercial operation to supply wood chip biomass boilers in the region.

Ed Milbank, who manages the family estate near Richmond, said: "The estate's woodland has now become a big asset for us, especially as oil prices are forecast to continue rising and demand for timber is growing. "We are now felling old, thin conifer blocks and re-planting and this year we have planted a further 70 acres of mixed woodland. Read more ...

Worlds largest biomass-fueled power plant

 Towards the End of January the worlds largest wood pellet-based biomass power plant will be fully commissioned and producing electricity at Tilbury in England. The power plant will be capable of generating an estimated 750 megawatts (MW) of base loan renewable power. “Although facing significant headwinds, the biopower industry is continuing to add capacity worldwide as governments look to develop low-cost, base load renewable energy sources,” says senior analyst Mackinnon Lawrence.

“Currently, power generation from biomass is hamstrung by policy uncertainty and the high costs of feedstock relative to fossil fuels, but the combination of a burgeoning international trade in biomass pellets, implementation of emission regulations, and increased utilisation of co-firing strategies is expected to accelerate global scale-up efforts over the next decade.” Read more ...

New energy center being develop in Plymouth

In Plymouth, England a new energy center is being developed, this new energy plant will convert 40,000 tons of waste wood into renewable energy and reducing CO2 emissions by about 16,500 tons a year. The center is the brainchild of MITIE’s Asset Management business, O-Gen UK and the Una Group. “We are delighted to be developing this energy centre in Plymouth and creating jobs in the local community. Green scheme being planned for North Northumberland

An environmental trail blazing scheme is being planned in Northumberland. At the cost of UK£6 million (US$9.572 million), this project could see a newly built renewable energy plant fed by a relocated sawmill. Graham Caygill, clerk of works at Northumberland Estates, said: “We have put a huge amount of time and effort into researching this project over a number of years and believe it could be really exciting for Alnwick. “The estate has over 4,000 hectares of forestry, so with this in mind we decided to explore renewable energy generation from woodchip. Developers refute biofuel claims as "Untrue"

Developers in the UK that was behind a biofuel plant for Newport, Isle of Wight, have dismissed what they call "a number of spurious claims" made about their plans. The development at Stag Lane has had campaigners claiming that if the development goes ahead the unique natural environment will be at risk by polluting the River Medina as well as worsen air quality and increase carbon emissions. However, the claims have been strongly refuted by project developer, Real Ventures Ltd. In a statement they have said they are "highly misleading or simply untrue." Read more ...

Yorkshire farm hailed as positive example for biomass

A farm in Yorkshire has been hailed as a positive example of the benefits of using woodfuel, after they installed a biomass heating system that will save the farm UK£28,000 (€32,251.656) a year. Carlshead Farm, near Wetherby, has received a UK34,000 (€39,162.725) investment from CO2Sense to install the boiler, which runs on biomass fuel sourced from the farm itself. Read more ...

Biomass boiler in Yeovil factory boost sustainability

13 new homes will become the some of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable in the country due to a new biomass boiler that is located in an old Yeovil glove factory. The new 150kW boiler will be run on sustainable sourced waste wood pellets (a carbon neutral fuel that is renewable) The boiler is at the centre of an historic redevelopment project headed by developers Zero C in partnership with South Somerset District Council and Yeovil Vision, running alongside Yeovil Country Park.
